It wouldn't be a Jeremy-centric event if it didn't have something to do with comic books. These Comic Book Clubs are a coordinated reading event of four important series. You can read them for the first time, or re-read them--it's all good! There are a variety of ways to get your hands on these issues, including Comixology, Amazon, and various back-issue sellers online. I've tried not to be TOO aggressive in my lists here! Comic Book Club events are primarily virtual and when you finish a run, hit me up via text, e-mail, phone, face-to-face, or whatever! To see the calendar, click directly on the word EVENTS in the menu above (not on one of the sub-menus that pops up under it).
Quarter One: The New Warriors
All they want to do is change the world. This team book about a team of new heroes for the nineties is the absolute pinnacle of character-first super-hero storytelling with nuance and charm.
This read is focused on the first 26 issues of The New Warriors, a 1990s series from Marvel Comics. These are available digitally through Marvel Unlimited and Comixology (see link on the right) and in print through the New Warriors Omnibus. Annuals 1 and 2 are optional in this process. For those wishing to go further, I am committing to reading through issue 53 (and Annual 3). Anyone who wants to discuss The New Warriors face-to-face at any time in Quarter 1 (Oct/Nov/Dec) can reach out to me and we can do a coffee shop debrief! |
Quarter Two: Ex Machina
Mitchell Hundred is the Mayor of New York City. He also happens to be a retired super-hero responsible for one incredible deed... or one incredible failure, depending on how you look at it. The story of his political career is captivating and haunting and exceedingly timely.
This read is focused on the complete series (50 issues) of Ex Machina, a 2000s series from DC/Wildstorm Comics. These are available in a variety of methods (digital and in print) but are best read in the four collected hardcover editions of the series. Anyone who wants to discuss Ex Machina face-to-face any time in Quarter 2 (Jan/Feb/Mar) can reach out to me and we can do a coffee shop debrief! |
Quarter Three: Thunderbolts
The Thunderbolts are the newest heroes in the Marvel Universe, and they have arrived just in time. The Avengers and the Fantastic Four are dead, and the Earth has never needed heroes more badly. But there is more to the story of the Thunderbolts than the public knows, and the tale of their journey is a masterclass in contemporary superhero story telling that takes ample advantage of the power of a shared universe.
This read is focused on the first 12 issues of Thunderbolts, a late 1990s series from Marvel Comics. These are available digitally and in print through single issues of trade collections. For those wishing to go further, I am committing to reading through issue 25. Anyone who wants to discuss Thunderbolts face-to-face any time in Quarter 3 (Apr/May/Jun) can reach out to me and we can do a coffee shop debrief! |
Quarter Four: Y: The Last Man
A mysterious event kills every male creature on the Earth in one instant, horrifying moment. Only two survivors carry the possibility of saving the human race--Yorick Brown and his pet monkey Ampersand. Together, they will explore a world left entirely unmanned and, in the process, examine the precarious systems of oppression and opportunity that have existed between men and women from antiquity. Heart-wrenching and achingly magnificent, this book is why comic books exist.
This read is focused on the entire 60 issue series of Y: the Last Man, a 2000s series from Vertigo/DC Comics. These are available in digital and physical editions, with several hardcover and paperback collections matching a variety of price points. Anyone who wants to discuss Y: the Last Man face-to-face any time in Quarter 4 (July/Aug/Sep) can reach out to me and we can do a coffee shop debrief! |
