The work week returns! CONTINUING STUFF: Another day of working on existing commitments... read an issue of New Warriors, watch an episode of Gargoyles, or keep going in your reading of Animal Farm! Whenever you get somewhere in any of these tasks, head to the FORUM to post about them so you can be making progress towards your badges! Not a Club: The BADGES page was updated with new rules yesterday. It is now possible to miss a couple of events throughout the year and still earn some of the most elusive badges! And an update coming today will make it a bit easier to participate in events remotely (through use of the FORUM) for those that can't physically be in the area. PREPARATION: Check your calendars and RSVP for MOVEI CLUB: Princess Bride this Friday! Oh, and get a ticket to go see Love Never Dies at the Civic Center to be part of our first THEATRE CLUB! Reflection: Day 12

It's going to be a productive day! CONTINUING STUFF: Today's mission is to watch two episodes of Gargoyles. If that doesn't tickle your fancy, read an issue of the New Warriors or get a little further in Animal Farm! Links to help you do all of these things are located on their respective pages (TV Club, Comics Club, Book Club) under EVENTS. And after you do some of these things, talk about them in the FORUM! PREPARATION: We are now only FIVE DAYS away from Movie Club: Princess Bride. The cocktail recipe is locked in and will be revealed soon, but I need your help--your RSVP helps me figure out how much stuff to buy! And, of course, Love Never Dies is at the Civic Center starting Tuesday... get tickets soon so you can participate in our first Theatre Club! Reflection: Day 11
At home, it was a lazy day of recovering from the rigors of travel. I read SO MANY COMIC BOOKS--in fact. for the first time in almost 6 months, I am completely caught up on all things X-Men! Some of them were great, some were mediocre... but I am glad to have read all of them. Though right now, I am having real emotional strife over the implications of the end of X-Men Blue and Extermination and what the events that appear to be coming next mean for Bobby Drake.
We also finished watching Netflix's recently-canceled Iron Fist series. I was very happy with Season 2, so its end makes me sad... but hopefully it is stepping aside to make room for a Daughters of the Dragon or Heroes for Hire series. That would be cool. All-in-all, it was a quiet day at home after the Market, and now today is going to be a day of catching up on a million little things! Back in Iowa! EXTRA CLUB: I'll be at the Downtown Des Moines Farmer's Market for a little while this morning (look! No notice to you at all!) and if you see me and we snap a picture together, you'll get a Jawa Badge! CONTINUING STUFF: It's a good day to read New Warriors, watch Gargoyles, or dig into Animal Farm. Head to the FORUM and chat about any of these things--I will be adding some comments there myself today! PREPARATION: Love Never Dies is at the civic center this coming week (that's a Theatre Club event--all you have to do is go and post a review on the FORUM! Or go on Tuesday and snap a picture with me and get a badge for both seeing me AND going to the show! Two for one! Oh, and please get your RSVP in for October 19th's showing of The Princess Bride (at my house). I need to get the ingredients for the custom cocktail in the perfect proportions! Reflection: Day 10
Reflection: Day 9
Happy National Coming Out Day! CONTINUING STUFF: Like yesterday, today is focused on continuing events. Read the New Warriors, keep plugging away at Animal Farm, watch some Gargoyles, or visit Las Vegas :) . Most importantly though, take your reactions to all of those things to the FORUM. I’ve not been great about keeping new posts up in there this week, but I’ll be better when I get home! Not a Club: National Coming Out Day is an important day for a lot of people. It has been very important to me at various times in my life, but not as much right now, since I like to believe I am pretty well out. But as a dear relative reminded me today with their courageous transparency, you never know when you will need to do more coming out... because who we are is in-progress, still baking, and always wonderful. So... I wish the world, and all of the awesome people in it, the courage to say what must be said and the compassion of those from whom they need it most today. I love you all. PREPARATION: We are just a week away from the Princess Bride party on the 19th (have you RSVP’d yet) BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE... there will be a Theatre Club next week as well! More details tomorrow! Reflection: Day 8
The Beast was an amazing vehicle, and it drew a lot of attention, as we traveled out to the lights and the spectacle (and an amazing dinner). Here’s the army of awesome people who just earned a Jawa Badge for hanging out in Vegas with me... and one more picture specifically me of me and Pamela to make up for a missing image from yesterday! I love it when we close the question blocks! Clearly... otherwise, I wouldn’t have used my “over-smiling” face. :P
It was a terribly fun night... and now we are back to the learning that is the focus of the trip. But I get to share some of my writing with the team tonight (something parody-ish and silly), so... I love it when one good day leads into another. It’s been one full week of BD365! ONLY FIFTY-ONE MORE TO GO! CONTINUING STUFF: Today is all about the continuing stuff! On the calendar, today is a great day to watch Gargoyles... but you can also be working towards badges by reading Animal Farm or the New Warriors... or by finding me in Vegas (after work hours...) and taking a picture with me! This is a very good time to start posting your thoughts on the FORUM as well... PREPARATION: Have I mentioned yet that October 19th is the Princess Bride viewing party? Get those RSVPs in by going to the MOVIE CLUB page! Reflection: Day 7
And, of course, once the work day ended, I was bombarded with people eager to earn a Jawa Badge! Three people did so yesterday...
EXTRA CLUB: Vegas! So, on one hand this Extra Club means that you hypothetically have a ton of chances to earn Jawa Badges by visiting with me in Las Vegas during my three day stay... on the other hand, I realize that isn't going to happen for most of us. So let's instead just acknowledge that this Extra Club is REALLY an indication that my updates may not be as jazzy for a few days :) CONTINUING STUFF: It's a fine day to be reading another issue or two of the New Warriors! You can also continue working your way through Gargoyles or a careful reading of Animal Farm. There have been a couple of posts in the FORUM about Gargoyles, and posts about both Animal Farm and the New Warriors are coming soon... but you don't have to wait for me to start talking! The threads are already set up for you in there... Not a Club: Expired driver's license + Boarding an Airplane seems like bad math. An adventure at the driver's license renewal station awaits! PREPARATION: The next major calendar event is our viewing party for the Princess Bride on the 19th. Use the RSVP form on the Movie Club page to book seats for you and any guests you care to bring with you! Reflection: Day 6
CONTINUING STUFF: The calendar tells me we should all be watching a little Gargoyles today! Watch an episode or two and chat about them on the FORUM to start your progress towards badges in TV CLUB! You could also be reading an issue or two of the New Warriors or working your way through Animal Farm! General Updates: This week, some revisions to the Badges page will be coming that should give folks more opportunities to earn! PREPARATION: Starting tomorrow, EXTRA CLUB: Vegas begins. Go to Vegas, find me, snap a picture, get a Jawa Badge. Yes, I know, that's ridiculous. WELCOME TO BD365! We also have our movie party for Princess Bride coming up on the 19th--mark your calendars and send in an RSVP! You and anyone you care to bring are welcome! Reflection: Day 5Yesterday was a rather somber day. Tom left for a business trip, so I worked on some projects around the house--finally loading all of my Sentinels of the Multiverse cards into their amazing collector's case. But then I settled in on the couch and watched The Laramie Project. It was exactly as powerful as I remembered. I'll write up some thoughts in the FORUM soon.
By that point of the day, it had become clear that we had insufficient players to actually play our GAME CLUB Battlestar Galactica game. I made the somewhat heartbreaking decision to cancel, but then Jeremy (not me, of course) called in a rescue. So Andrew and I drove to Jeremy's house and played Battlestar with Robin and Aeris (his wife and daughter, respectively). We had fun. Even though I forgot to snap a picture, I am awarding them all a BRONZE BADGE for participating in at least one GAME CLUB. Here are some placeholders while I work to recapture that photographic evidence...
CONTINUING STUFF: We are still watching Gargoyles, reading Animal Farm, and reading the New Warriors. Today would be a great day to share your thoughts on the FORUM about these things—I will probably be doing the same! Not a Club: Yesterday was the 20th anniversary of the brutal attack that ultimately claimed the life of Matthew Shepard. I may write more about this soon in my regular blog (see link at right), but for now... I am adding the HBO movie version of the pay The Laramie Project to the Extra Movies list on the. MOVIE CLUB page. Watch it if you can. It’s important. PREPARATION: Coming up this week (starting Tuesday) is a very silly EXTRA CLUB! If you happen to be in Las Vegas between Tuesday and Friday and you see me, snap a picture with me for a Jawa Badge! I’m there for work, so people that are there with me for work reasons don’t qualify. At least not during work hours! ALSO COMING SOON... October 19 is the first MOVIE CLUB! We are watching the Princess Bride. There will be fancy popcorn and there will be a custom cocktail. RSVP on the MOVIE CLUB page to reserve your seat (basically so I can get popcorn and drinks in appropriate quantities...) Relection: Day 4Yesterday was an important day. We made a trip to my hometown to say good-bye to an important person in the lives of my family, our neighbor (a man known round-the-world as Kupe). He was a cantankerous, chuckling guy with a missing thumb and a big-eyed wonder for many things. He was a good guy, and it’s a poorer world without him in it... but there were a lot of fun stories shared by those who came together to remember him.
That also meant we spent 4 hours or so in the car, so I got to listen to some of the audiobook I’ve been working through (Eddings’ Domes of Fire) and also to sing along at the top of my lungs to the whole Hamilton soundtrack. Poor Tom! In other news, Tom slipped me this adorable birthday present... and I got a haircut, which I decided to photo-document while standing next to a creepy/cool Halloween decoration at Target. We really, really love Halloween in our house! CONTINUING STUFF: Nothing new starts today! Hooray! On the calendar, we have today marked as a TV Club: Gargoyles day, so it is a good day to snuggle up with a hot chocolate and watch all five episodes of the pilot movie, Awakening! Hit the TV CLUB page under events for some links so you can do that in YouTube for free... or for a link to pick up your own copy of Gargoyles to own forever and ever! Hit the FORUM and post your thoughts about episodes as you watch them! MORE CONTINUING STUFF: We are still reading Animal Farm and the New Warriors comic book series! Hit the FORUM and post your thoughts about chapters and issues as you read them! Not a Club: There are bound to be parts of BD365 that are not sweetness and light, and today is one of those. I am off to a memorial service for a dear family friend today. Be kind to the people in your life today. PREPARATION: Tomorrow is our first GAME CLUB, playing Battlestar Galactica! You really should think about coming—the game plays best with 5 or 6 players, and we are short of that right now! If you want to play, drop in to tthe Board Game Club page under events and fill out the simple RSVP form. See you tomorrow! NOTE: If your ambition is to get the Platinum Badge (or the Gold Board Game Badge), you can ONLY DO THAT if you make it to Battlestar tomorrow! Don’t miss out on badge action! Reflection: Day 3Yesterday was a super-fun day! We enjoyed dinner at Wasabi Tao, a delightful sushi place in downtown Des Moines, then we hit the Iowa Wild game—and the Wild won! You can follow those adventures on my Instagram if you like... or you can see highlights right here!
